Jacobs uses a lot of dark imagery. There is a terrible storm at night when the story opens. The White's home is cozy but filled with dark shadows amidst the firelight. The severed monkey's par looks shrunken and contorted. The imagery stays dark all the way to the climactic storm at the end which frames the story.
