In wearing the veil, the minister casts a funeral-like atmosphere over what should be a joyous occasion, prompting some there to imagine that he had brought the spirit of the dead girl from the funeral for the purpose of some unholy or otherworldly marriage. As he raises his glass of wine to toast the newly married couple, Hooper glimpses his own veiled face in the mirror and is struck by the same sense of evil he has evoked in his parishioners. Horrified, he runs out into the darkness of the night.
