Disability is a motif in this story. Gregor worked to pay the bills for the family, the family did little or nothing, allowing him to carry the full weight of responsibility on his shoulders. Once he became disabled, suddenly they found that they had it within them to carry on jobs and survive despite his income ending. As such, they were not as helpless as they perceived themselves to be before Gregor himself was unable to work. The disabled became abled when the abled became disabled.
