What is the theme in The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare?

Christian mercy is a theme but Shakespeare is not entirely sympathetic to it. On the surface Christians in the story value mercy and human relationship over business. By the end of the play, however, Shylock is stripped of his wealth, his identity, and his faith by the Christians who purport compassion.
