Berry's writing style is plain and simple, perhaps fitting to describe the plain and simple lives of the residents of Port William. His sentences tend to be short and economical, rarely using high-level vocabulary, and only when absolutely necessary. The effect of this is to make the author as transparent as possible and to convey as "directly" as possible the story of Jack and those around him.
