Madame Vanzade is the elderly, invalid who hires Christine. She is a kind and generous woman, and over time, Christine becomes quite fond of her. After Christine leaves her home to live with Claude, however, the old woman neglects to provide for Christine in her will as she does for her other loyal servants. Vanzade is a minor character in the novel.
