Taeko is the youngest of the four sisters. She is also described as the most "modern". She prefers Western clothes, she smokes, and she has started her own business making Japanese dolls. When she decides to learn to sew and open a dress shop, her intentions are alarming to the rest of the family, who forbid her from becoming a working woman. She defies the family and is outwardly banished.
