Fowles uses masks both in literally and metaphorically in the novel. Characters that challenge Nicholas wear literal masks over their faces and wear masks of different types of clothing on their bodies. These characters also wear different identities and emotional characteristics as masks and invent stories to mask their real pasts. It's also possible to see Nicholas' journey as the removal of the selfish, insensitive, unenlightened mask he's worn all his life. Once his mask is removed, he is able to commit himself to Alison, to their love, and to their relationship.
