In Chapter Five, themes of mysticism, spirituality and religion come to the forefront, and although the reader isn't yet aware of the veracity of the prophecy, the answer of "yes" bodes well for Genly's mission. It foreshadows a change in his fortunes and that change on Gethen will come about in Genly's lifetime. Through all of the exposition about spirituality it is made clear to Genly that Faxe tells him that there really is only one question that can be answered, which is that every living being eventually will die. Faxe also says that the uncertainty of life makes life possible.
