Boredom and monotony are recurring ideas. Boredom is one of the most common emotions but also one of the motivating forces for the residents of Thalia. Sonny fails to identify it while he is holding Charlene's breast in his hand, but it is clearly the defining quality of his year-long relationship with her. Lois tells Jacy that "life is very monotonous. Things happen the same way over and over again. I think it's more monotonous in this part of the country than it is in other places, but I don't really know that - it may be monotonous everywhere" (p. 49).
