John B. Gordon came up with the Confederate plan to take Fort Stedman and implemented it. His plan failed because Gordon didn't know the strength of the Federal artillery batteries that were located both behind and alongside Fort Stedman. Gordon oversaw the surrendering of Confederate arms to Chamberlain, and returned the salute that Chamberlain ordered.
