Jurgis turns to a life of crime after the death of his wife and child because circumstances have led him to living on the street and then to prison again. Jurgis is frustrated, so he agrees to go into a partnership with a man he met in jail. Later, Jurgis is approached by another man who offers him money to impact an election in Packingtown. These things leave Jurgis wealthier than he was before, but when he wears out his welcome, he is right back to where he started.
