Who is Private Hugh Hall from The Journals of Lewis and Clark and what is their importance?

Private Hugh Hall was in his early thirties when he joined the Corps of Discovery. He is most remembered for having been punished for drinking on duty early on in the expedition. He was punished with fifty lashes on his bare back, but he kept his post as a member of the party.
