In The Inheritance, identity crisis is a vehicle for carrying the theme of the Indian Caste System and how alienating and isolating it can be. For example, in the Indian culture it is perfectly acceptable to treat those in a lower caste as sub-human, or as slaves. You can see this happening with the Judge and the cook. Sai and Gyan cross those lines and this causes the identity crisis that they experience. Identity crisis happens again when the Judge decides not to throw the pineapple overboard to bless the voyage because he doesn't want the Westerners to think him provencial and backwards. He sacrifices his custom so that he can fit in with the WEsterners. Both Sai and Biju are taken out of their Indian culture for many years, wehre they initially give up all their Indian cultural heritage. Later, when they attempt to embrace it, they are treated badly by their own community.
