Cucumber sandwiches appear at the beginning of the first act. There are not very many of them and Algernon finishes the few that they have, and when he acts surprised to Lane that there are none, Lane covers for him but calls him cheap at the same time. Tea, cake, and bread and butter appear during the argument Cecily and Gwendolen have with one another over who is engaged to Ernest. Cecily manages to insult Gwendolen gravely by putting sugar in her tea and giving her cake instead of bread and butter. Finally, Jack and Algernon quarrel over muffins after they have been discovered to be liars.
