Algernon and Jack both pretend to be Ernest in order to marry the women they love. They are both members of the upper-class. They have similar appetites and both find their lives boring. Jack begins the play believing that marriage and family is important, although finds his own family boring. Algernon is far more cynical about marriage, although he falls deeply in love with Cecily and decides to marry her immediately.
