Who is The Travelers from The Illustrated Man and what is their importance?

The Travelers appear in the story, The Highway. The group is comprised of a man and three young women, who stop at Hernando's farm to get water for their overheated radiator. The Travelers inform Hernando that there's been a nuclear war, and are themselves, terrified for their familes.
