The two most important elements of the novel's setting are the time and the place in which it is set. In terms of the former, the setting of the action within the context of World War II places the individual experiences of the characters within the larger, albeit mostly implied, context of humanity's experiences of power, violence, evil, and courage. A related component of this setting is the constant presence and/or awareness of death. Again, this is mostly implied, but there are points at which death's presence, not to mention its repercussions, are suddenly and powerfully immediate for both the characters and the reader.
