Why is Marin such a mystery to the girls?

I wouldn't say that Marin is a mystery. The girls look up to her because she's older, and because she can do all of the things little girls want to do. Marin can wear make-up.... she even sells Avon. Better yet, she has a boyfriend and talks about marriage.
