Lily Bart does not want to follow social conventions. She fails to marry "well" even though she has the beauty and social poise to do it. Perhaps she is too proud or perhaps she wants a life that is different from the forced conformity of women in the Victorian era. In any case, Lily constantly tries to find an identity outside of marriage and the bringing up of children.
