How does the author use foreshadowing in The House of Mirth?

Wharton plays with social conventions in her story. At one point Mrs. Trenor comments that between the Winton and Farley families there are, "five divorces and six sets of children." This foreshadows this novel not being about the gender status quo of marriage and family in the Victorian era.
