Two main aspects of setting are important to consider - geographic and spiritual/intellectual. In terms of the former, the hymns are all "set" in Ancient Greece, a Mediterranean country composed (at the time) of several city/states, each with its own broad strokes socio-political identity (Athens was intellectual, Sparta was military, Mycenae was seafaring, etc.).
