Home is a central theme in the story. Eleanor's main priority throughout the novel is to find herself a home. This is not explicitly revealed to the reader until the very end. Her desperation does not become clear to the other guests of Hill House either, until Eleanor admits that she has stolen her sister's car and will no longer be welcome in her sister's home.
