The author uses the motif of personal responsibility to show that racist attitudes in the United States result in African Americans being presumed guilty, and white Americans being given the benefit of the doubt. Khalil was shot by a white police officer because he was a young black man in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. Because of racial and cultural stereotypes, the officer assumed Khalil was a criminal and potentially violent, and chose to shoot first and ask questions later. The novel repeatedly asks who was responsible for the shooting.
