The physiology of the hand is a recurring idea. Wilson is appreciative of two authors who write about the hand before him and two other scientists who also make a significant contribution to this work. Sir Charles Bell is a Scottish surgeon who claims that practice makes the hand and eye develop together. They work as sense organs so the brain teaches itself by making hand and eye work together precisely "during a process of exploration." Bell describes human hands as "consummation of all perfection as an instrument."
