In Scene III, Mildred comes to realize that she does not belong in this world. The deep shock of being there, and of seeing a truth and reality she has never had to face, is a heightened portrayal of what O'Neill says happens when anyone shows up in a world where they do not fit. It's an intense shock to her, and foreshadows what happens to Yank later in the play when he tries to fit in where he does not belong.
