There is imagery of violence and occupation. The Arab prisoner is arrested under French law in his own country. The imagery the Arab with bound hands walking with Balducci has a sense of irony to it. The gun imagery also holds a sense of impending violence. The imagery of Daru's little schoolhouse on the windswept Atlas Mountains gives a sense of isolation and loneliness.
