What is the author's tone in The Guest by Albert Camus?

There is a tone of both resignation and desperation. Daru is resigned to his French identity even though he longs to be accepted as an Arab. He desperately wants to win the trust of the Arabs but his white skin and French features prohibit this. There is also the underlying suspense of impending violence even though it never materializes.
