The climax in the story occurs when Daru gives the Arab his choice of going to French prison or taking his chances with freedom. The prisoner chooses French jail in Tinguit. The isolation for Daru at the end of the story is devastating and complete, as the writing on the chalkboard accuses Daru of betraying an Arab brother. Daru is helpless in his attempts to appease the Arabs, and he unwittingly becomes a symbol of French occupation whether he likes it or not.
