Nick moves into this atmosphere with the expectations of becoming a part of the upper class, maybe making a buiness for himself. However, as events unfold and he becomes involved in the day to day lives of those living wealthy he begins to see the dark, ugly, and desperate lives that they lead. He becomes disillusioned with the American Dream, espcially the way that his cousin, Daisy acts as well as Tom and his affairs.
