The Valley of the Ashes in The Great Gatsby, represents social and moral decay in an industrialized world. Humanity is gone and replaced with product, capitalism, and greed. Nothing lives there and what does manage to scrape out an existence there is twisted and warped. This represents the descent of America into its baser and darker self at the hands of consumerism.
