For the most part, the language of the novel is standard modern American English. However, many Dakota words are used as well. This gives the reader a feeling of the importance of the language and culture on the characters in the novel. Even the most modern of the teenagers occasionally uses a Dakota word for "grandfather" or "sacred clown." The author uses these words as a way of communicating that the traditional culture of the Sioux still influences the modern inhabitants of the reservation.
