One major theme is the novel The Grass Dancer is tradition. Connection is an important aspect of the novel, the connection wrought by cultural traditions on the Dakota reservation and often destroyed by the desire to leave them behind. Harley wishes to embrace the traditional dance, Frank wishes to become a spiritual leader or shaman like his grandfather before him, and Evelyn..... she wants to escape all ties.
