How does John Steinbeck use imagery in The Grapes of Wrath?

There is a lot of poverty imagery of the 1930's. Farmland in the dust bowl is dry and dead. The migrants like the Joad family are dishevelled on their old jalopies that are barely holding them. Images of the lush California valley juxtapose the pathetic state of the migrants and the dry dust bowl they came from.
