How did Jonas receive the memory of pain?

The Giver gave Jonas the memory of pain using the sled. Unfortunately, Jonas did not experience the exhileration of his first ride in the snow, as he was thrown from the sled and suffered a broken leg.

When Jonas' mind returned to the room in the Annex, his leg still hurt terribly. The Giver refused him pain medication. Lesson learned.
