Calpurnia Farthing might best be described as a cowgirl fairy, wild and windblown. Penny might best be described as Calpurnia's adopted daughter, having been rescued from an arduous fairy life by her. Penny is a changeling (see below) brought to Fairyland by the fairies from whom she was rescued by Calpurnia. Calpurnia, like all fairies in Fairyland is, when September meets her, bound by delicate iron chains. Together, Calpurnia and Penny accompany September and her friends as they ride the wild velocipedes towards Autumn and the Worsted Woods.
