One major conflict in the novel revolves around the family farm. When Will returns from the military, he questions his father's reasons for things, and Joe is clearly angry. He is neither accustomed to nor enjoys being questioned by his sons. Will wants to keep the farm, as he plans to cultivate it one day, but Joe has plans to farm less and work more with lumber. This conflict foreshadows the storyline later in the novel as the two argue again about the use of the land.
