Marcel learns that the Haitian Revolution freed many of his ancestors. This gives him the information to piece in some of the missing puzzle pieces to his family history. Most of his family were freed persons of color living in New Orleans, often called Creole.  However, through a set of circumstances, and in disgrace, he is sent to live with his aunt among many Creole planters on the Cane River. It is here that Marcel learns some of his (African Diasporan) history, including the the fact that his mother was stolen off the street by his adopted aunt during that time.
