Guilt and shame play an important role in this novel for several reasons. First, it is guilt and shame that motivate Roland to keep Flagg around. Roland is not a smart man, never has been, and the strain of being king has always been difficult for him. Roland begins to rely on Flagg more and more during his reign, unable to make decisions himself regarding many of the affairs of the kingdom. Roland is ashamed of his inability to handle his kingdom himself and this shame adds to his need to rely on Flagg, putting Flagg in a position to kill Roland and move him out of his way.
