The most dominant theme of the book is scientific pursuit and this is apparent throughout the book. The author points out that the purpose of the expedition was scientific and not adventure. They weren't conducting the expedition just for the sake of being the first to travel into uncharted territory. The purpose of the expedition was to survey and chart the unknown territory. Because of this, the author maintained detailed journals and records.
