Lionel Wallace, from the Wells short story, The Door in the Wall, chronicles the belief of a man that he once enjoyed a secret garden of such beauty that it made others seem dull. The garden was enchanted and he truly believed it. Wells leads us to believe that Wallace's childhood was such that he escaped into this world with the enchanted garden to escape his harsh realities.
