In The Diary of a Young Girl, which is the story of Anne Frank, the people who lived in the annex had to live a very restricted lifestyle. They couldn't wear shoes during the day, couldn't move around. They were not allowed to speak, flush the toilet, or run water. They could not leave the annex for any reason and they had to paint all of the windows black.
