Mrs. van Daan's fur coat is a symbol of her old life.... a good life that ended the day the Nazis forced her family into hiding... the one thing she has left. Some people see her refusal to see the coat as selfish, and they be right. But we also have to think about the circumstances and drastic changes she's experienced and show a bit of empathy.
