Who is Gitl from The Devil's Arithmetic and what is their importance?

Gitl is Shmuel's sister, which also makes her Hannah/ Chaya's aunt. Gitl survives the camps and moves to Israel, where she will eventually begin and run a charity for survivors of the Holocaust to relocate and reunite with their family members. She never marries.
