Uncle Jimmy's need for assistance in Chapter One provides some back story for the novel. His account of what has happened helps explain to the reader why everyone is panicking, and why Alex and his family are in so much danger. His food provisions foreshadow the need for food later in the novel, and the gunshots Julie hears while at the bodega show that society is rapidly deteriorating.
