Destiny is another theme in the book. Johnny Smith spent four and a half years in a coma. Before Johnny's accident he joked to Sarah that he had used up all his luck in one night on the Wheel of Fortune. Later Johnny feels that perhaps his mother was right when she said Johnny came out of the coma because it was his destiny to do God's work. Johnny resents this implication and everything he has to go through as a result of the accident. Johnny simply wants to be alone, get better, and resume his life the way it was before the accident. This includes Johnny's relationship with Sarah, which has obviously ended.
