Self-control is a recurring idea in the story. When Johnny comes out of the coma no time has passed for him, even though the rest of world has moved on. It is a difficult situation, missing out on four and half years of one's life, but nearly impossible to handle the fact that Sarah has moved on with her life, is married and has a child. Johnny must exercise great self-control when it comes to Sarah, the woman Johnny loves.
