Leah Monk is Sue's mother. Sue implies that her mother has gone along with patriarchal ways of giving preferential treatment to her younger brothers. Sue also remembers, however, that her mother's love united her with her siblings when they fought. Before leaving on her Goddess tour to Crete and Greece, Sue sent her mother an essay she'd written entitled, Going Back for Mary. That Christmas, her mother gave her a pewter statue of Mary to show she understood the journey and blessed it.
