Who was responsible for witch trials in The Crucible?

This depends on your point of view. Abigail Williams lit the metaphorical fire that plunged Salem into paranoia and persecution. I think the atmosphere of the village was incendiary to begin with. Petty squabbles between neighbors were ripe for something like this to happen.
