Racism is present in every story in this collection, which is not surprising since they all take place in the South in the 1940s and 1950s. Prejudice toward any person or culture that is "different" was a common occurrence in the era in which O'Connor wrote, and she unabashedly reveals the irrational motivation behind and dire consequences of such behavior.
